Clean with an intense colour and cherry red reflections.  Aromatic intensity and complexity, red and black fruit appear with light vanilla and balsamic notes. Refreshing with a mellow, smooth, charming finish.

Rioja Crianza retains a strong and harmonius character, with a light style, good oak, nice toasty nose,and fruit.  This Rioja Crianza represents very clearly the ethos of the winery.

Food Match: An ideal wine to be drunk unaccompanied, while it goes perfectly well with cold meats, pasta based dishes, mixed vegetables and cheese.  It’s a winner!

Rioja vineyards were planted in 1850s by wealthy merchants/industrialists from the Basque region, which is just over a mountain range from Rioja to the coast. They wanted fragrant reds (yes reds) to serve light and chilled with the fish and meats they ate. At the same time French merchants began to look across the border when Phylloxera struck their vines.

There was a cross fertilisation of knowledge but it meant that the Crianza style we have today is very much the wedding of Tempranillo reds wanted by the Basques with a lick of oak ageing learnt from the French. Of course oak came to predominate in all Spanish red wines, but here it is gentle to start with. This is to simplify and not all wineries did the same things but it does to get our bearings.

The grapes are harvested at their optimal ripeness point, fermentation takes place in temperature controlled stainless steel vats.  The malolactic fermentation takes place in French oak vats, and it is then aged in bordeaux style American and Eastern European oak barrels for 16 to 18 months.

Bodegas Perica has recieved a number of awards for a their wines, the Viña Olagosa Rioja Crianza was also awarded a silver medal at the Bacchus Awards.

James Suckling awards more than 90 points to five of our wines in his latest report on Spanish wines.

The American wine critic James Suckling, considered by Forbes magazine as one of the most influential wine critics in the world, has just released the scores of Spanish wines tasted during the year 2018, elaborating a list with more than 2.500 references, among which Bodegas Perica is present with more than 90 points.

So, our David Perica has been scored with 93 points, a wine “nicely focused red plums and blueberries on the nose. Sappy, succulent and juicy palate with plenty of lively tannins and bright, fleshy black cherries and plums.Tangy, energetic finish”, as James Suckling has described in his report.

Perica Oro has scored 92 points and according to him it is a wine “concentrated, mature-berry character, generous tannins and a discreet hint of sweetness that make this an appealing wine with along, fresh finish.”

In addition, both the Perica Viña Olagosa crianza and the Perica Viña Olagosa reserva have been rated with 90 points.
